From Craig Jones of Kansas City: I love brats and I love stuffed burgers....so I thought why not combine the two for a perfect bite size meal...and it is. The main point of this recipe is to use your favorite sausage, since that is the star of the show. If you’re favorite sausage is not loose, just remove the casings.
Ingredients:
1-1/2 lbs. Sausage - use your favorite sausage since this will be the star of the show. If you favorite sausage is not loose, you can just remove the casings.
4 oz. Extra sharp cheese divided into 4 cubes
4 Pretzel buns
Preparation:
Divide the sausage into four equal sized balls. Place one cube of the cheese inside the burger and create a patty (aprox 3/4” thick)
Grilling Instructions:
Prepare the grill for a two zone direct/indirect medium heat. Let your GrillGrates heat up at least 10 minutes.
Grill the “burgers” over direct heat for about 6 - 7 minutes a side until thoroughly cooked to at least 165 degrees.
During the last 5 minutes of cooking place the pretzel buns on indirect heat for warming.
Extra - If you want, you can add more cheese on top of the burgers during the last minute of cooking.
After the burgers are done, tent loosely with aluminum foil and let rest for 5 minutes.
A note about the sausage:
One of my favorite sausages is made in Kansas City, KS by Krizman’s House of Sausage. They make a special blend for Oklahoma Joe’s BBQ located in Kansas City. If you haven’t heard of Oklahoma Joe’s, they are known for having some of the best BBQ in the world and in fact, Anthony Bourdain listed Oklahoma Joe’s as one of the 13 places you should eat before you die.
