A patty melt is a crowd favorite. There are some strong opinions on what makes a patty melt a patty melt. A purist will tell you that it is seeded rye and swiss and a southerner will tell you that it is sourdough and cheddar. We did both to bring you two incredible options. This recipe is great for parties as it only takes about 15 minutes (once the grill is hot!) and it gets your guest interacting with the meal. So tell us, are you a rye or sourdough person?

Ingredients

Servings

0.5

lbs

80/20 ground chuck

0.25

Yellow Onions, chopped

Cheddar Cheese

Swiss Cheese

Seeded Rye OR Sourdough Bread

Directions

Step 1

Separate the ground chuck into 16 equal-sized balls (about lime sized)

Step 2

Flip your GrillGrates onto the flat side and warm up your Gas/Pellet Grill or place them once Charcoal Grill is ready

Step 3

Spread your roughly chopped onions in an even layer on the grill - this will help the onions grill evenly and quickly

Step 4

After about 5 minutes flip the onions, now it is time to start the smash burgers!

Step 5

Place the chuck balls on the hot GrillGrate surface, using something flat immediately "smash" the burgers as thin as possible

Step 6

Smash burgers cook quickly - go ahead and place bread on the grill butter side down! Place two pieces of cheese on each slice of bread.

Step 7

Once the cheese is melted to desired gooey goodness place two patties per sandwich, cover the patties with grilled onions, and top with the other slice of bread. Let it sit there for about 15-30 seconds and press the sandwich to meld it together
