I have used wood chips in the Grillgrate valleys and have used smoker boxes, metal foil, etc. None worked to my satisfaction. The cast iron smoker box did not smoke! Since the pecan harvest last Fall, I have used pecan shells in the tube smoker. That is as good as it gets. I cannot pack them tight so I get ~30 minutes, but that is all I need on my grill. I light them off on a burner. When I really want to smoke meat, I go to my 22″ WSM and use small logs.
ROP –
Wanted to do a dry run and check how long this would smoke. I pulled out my WSM 18, filled the tube with pellets, lit the end using my propane torch (purchased here–worked excellent) and after 10 minutes blew out the flame and placed inside the WSM. I placed a thermocouple at the upper grate then buttoned up the smoker at 11:30a. I had smoke until 5:00p. The smoker temp was mid to high 80’s most of the time. When in direct sunlight the smoker temp hit about 91. (Ambient temp was low 50’s) Should be good for smoking cheese nuts etc. I am happy with what I have purchased thus far.

Works greate with pellets. It’s an easy and quick way to add some smoke. I have the small tube and use it on a gas grill with grill grates. Lighting with a propane torch is quick and easy. It allows me to control the amount of time I want smoke and the pellets used.
Fran Shove –
The 6″ Tube Smoker worked very well on a gas grill, once I got it started. I only filled it 2/3 of the tube capacity. It took about 20 minutes to “get smoking”. But, once the smoking pellets were lit, the smoke kept rolling for 2 hours!…Good Product.
